from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The bao'en temple ( Chinese  平武報恩寺  /  平武报恩寺 , Pinyin Píngwǔ Bao'en sì , English Bao'en Temple in Pingwu ) or the Bao'en convent of Pingwu is a Buddhist convent complex of the 15th century , the time of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), in northwest Sichuan in the People's Republic of China . It was built by the governor of Pingwu, Wang Xi 王 玺 , between 1440 and 1460. He is famous for its glazed roof tiles , as well as in the Imperial City in Beijing were used.

"As a symbol of his gratitude to the emperor for allowing him to build such a large temple, Wang Xi named the temple" Bao'en ", which means" to pay a debt of gratitude "."

With a size of 278 by 100 meters, it is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Sichuan. It was badly damaged in the severe earthquake in 2008 .

The complex includes the main hall, pavilions, Tianwang Hall, Beim Hall (with a thousand-armed Avalokitesvara statue) and Huayan Hall (named after the Avatamsaka Sutra ("Flower Garland Sutra")) with a rotating sutras library from 1443. The Work on the murals, sculptures and other ornamental details was completed in 1460.

The hall has double eaves . Groups of wooden ox-head capitals ( dougong ), a collection of blocks and arms (or consoles ) that support the roof of the hall, were placed underneath. Forty-eight different types and more than two thousand two hundred such dougong carry and adorn the construction of the Bao'en temple complex, which is why it is also known as the "Dougong Museum" by experts. The main hall is the most important building; it is covered with black and green glazed roof tiles.

In the middle of this hall is a golden Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) statue carved from a Nanmu tree . The figure is nine meters high and has a thousand and four hands spread like a fan behind it. In the center of the Huayan Hall is the large octagonal wooden structure of the revolving bookshelves of the sutras library.

The Bao'en Temple of Pingwu ( Pingwu Bao'en si ) has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (4-156) since 1996 .
