Baorisa hieroglyphica is a butterfly ( moth )foundin Asia from the family of the owl butterfly (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The moths reach a wingspan of 2 inches (50 millimeters). The top of the forewing is white in color. Along the front and outer edge there is a pattern of irregular black stripes and spots that shimmer slightly bluish and are sometimes reminiscent of pictorial writing, similar to the Egyptian hieroglyphs , and accordingly refer to the species name. An orange-colored band extends from the basal region to the disk region , which is drawn towards the inner edge with small black dots. Noticeable is a large yellow-brown spot that is broadly red towards the outer edge. As a common name, the species is sometimes referred to in English as Picasso-Moth (Picasso moth) due to this striking drawing, based on works by the painter Pablo Picasso , a derivation that is sometimes also found in other strikingly colored animals, for example the Picasso triggerfish ( Rhinecanthus aculeatus ) was applied. The upper side of the hind wings of Baorisa hieroglyphica is white without drawing and shows a slight pink shimmer.
Pre-imaginal stages
The first stands have not yet been described.
Similar species
The genus Baorisa was initially considered to be monotypical with the only species Baorisa hieroglyphica . However, studies have shown that Baorisa contains at least three other allopatric species, namely Baorisa philippina from the Philippines , Baorisa sulawesiana from Sulawesi and Baorisa floresiana from Flores . The holotype of Baorisa hieroglyphica was in Otto Staudinger's butterfly collection , which went to the Zoological Museum of the Humboldt University in Berlin (ZMB) after his death in 1937 . However, the copy can no longer be found. At the end of the 1990s a neotype for this taxon was deposited in the ZMB. A determination of the four types mentioned above should be made by specialists.
Distribution and occurrence
So far only a few specimens of Baorisa hieroglyphica have been found in India and Indonesia . The butterfly used for the first description came from Darjeeling .
Way of life
Details on the way of life of Baorisa hieroglyphica have yet to be researched.
