The Picasso triggerfish ( Rhinecanthus aculeatus ) lives in the Red Sea , in the Indo-Pacific from the coasts of East and South Africa to Japan , Hawaii , Lord Howe Island and Tuamotu, and in the eastern Atlantic from Senegal to South Africa. He prefers shallow lagoons with coral growth, sand and scree zones and coral reefs . The fish are found mainly in very shallow areas up to a depth of 5 meters. They live singly or in pairs and are territorial. Occasionally, however, they are also found in large groups.

Breeding-nurturing Picasso triggerfish defend their spawn extremely aggressively and also attack divers and swimmers. They can make whirring noises if they are disturbed.

The fish, which grow to a length of 30 centimeters, feed on various bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as worms , mollusks , sea urchins , crabs , but also algae , foraminifera and detritus .

As an aquarium fish, the Picasso triggerfish is hardly suitable for beginners because of its aggressiveness.
