history

The city was the starting point of the old caravan route from the Nile through the Nubian Desert to Sawakin on the Red Sea .

At the time of the Mahdi uprising , Berber was of great strategic importance. The Mahdists conquered the city on May 20, 1884. This cut off Khartoum from supplies from Egypt. From 1885 the British tried to advance from Sawakin via Barbar to the upper Nile and to build a railway to connect these places. In 1886, however, after completing around 30 kilometers, the company was given up.

During Kitchener's campaign to recapture the Sudan, a flying column was formed under General Hunter in July 1897 to take Abu Hamed. From July 29th to August 7th, this column advanced 133 miles through the desert in forced marches and was able to reach Abu Hamed before the relief troops of the Mahdists. The Sheikh of Barber, Zeki Osman, then evacuated Barber on August 24, which was occupied by irregular camel riders of the Anglo-Egyptian army on August 31 and by Hunter's column on September 5.
