Barbara Wiedenman (n) (* 1695 ?; †?) Was a midwife and author of a “Brief Instructions for Christian Midwives”.

Life

Barbara Wiedenmann initially practiced as a midwife in the country, and on January 29, 1729 she was admitted as a midwife in the Imperial City of Augsburg . A few years later she was the leader of the Augsburg free midwives. In 1738 she published the “Brief Instructions for Christian Midwives”, which was published by JJ Lotter's sel. Erben and was dedicated to the building department of the free imperial city of Augsburg, the authority to which the midwives were subordinate. In 1751 the book was published in a second edition. In the introduction she gives some information about her life. Barbara Wiedenman was married to the Augsburg eye, incision and surgeon . She probably entered his medical practice as early as 1719, where she accompanied more than 1,800 pregnant women. She herself wrote in the introduction to the book that her husband had put her experiences with obstetrics on paper. Since she seems to be very well read, it is quite possible that she wrote the work herself. In it she encourages her colleagues to acquire knowledge. Because she knows that a good birth does not only depend on the circumstances (child and mother), but also on the knowledge and experience of the midwife. Therefore, she wrote down her experiences as a guide for the other midwives or had her husband write them down.

In the book she also deals with the administration of labor-inducing drugs and the use of a delivery chair. The book is illustrated with 20 pictures.

According to her own statements, Barbara Wiedenman gave birth to 15 children herself.
