Barber's anemonefish ( Amphiprion barberi ) is a species of anemonefish found in the coral reefs of Fiji , Tongas and Samoas . It was only described in 2008 and in honor of Dr. Paul Barber of Boston University . This is in recognition of his contributions to the understanding of the genetic relationships among various organisms that inhabit the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific.

features

The largest type specimen of Amphiprion barberi had a length of 8.6 cm. Amphiprion barberi is very similar to the West Pacific black-fin anemonefish ( Amphiprion melanopus ), but differs from it in its rather reddish-orange trunk (dark brown to blackish in A. melanopus ), the 11 to 19 spinulae (small spines) above the gill cover (19th century) up to 26 in A. melanopus ) and genetic data. As with A. melanopus, a wide, white-blue horizontal stripe runs across the head directly behind the eye, the greatest width of which corresponds to the diameter of the eye. The fins are also reddish. The body length is 1.7 to 1.9 times the body height.

Way of life

Barber's anemonefish lives closely tied to coral reefs in water depths of 2 to 10 meters. Like all anemonefish, it lives in symbiosis with large sea anemones, the bubble anemone ( Entacmaea quadricolor ) and the leather anemone ( Heteractis crispa ) . The fish usually swim in small groups for a short distance over their symbiotic anemones and eat zooplankton . They care for the brood and stick their eggs, which are guarded by the male, onto a solid substrate.
