List of breeds of chicken

The Barbezieux chicken breed was named after the French town of the same name, Barbezieux in the Charente-Maritime department , and has an exceptional size and meat quality. It is only recognized within the French and Belgian standards.

features

The breed is one of the largest among European chickens and is highly valued as a meat breed. Due to the abundant egg production (170–200 eggs p. A.), One can speak of a dual-purpose breed . The egg weight is also noticeable, often over 100 g per egg. There is only the black color.

origin

The breed is closely related to the area of origin and is probably related to the Marans from the neighboring region. It may also be of Spanish origin. Some authors, not just Edward Brown , assign it to the Spanish races instead of the French. During a poultry show in Paris in 1860, a Barbezieux was awarded first prize. In 1907 a French standard was officially approved. After the First World War there was a sharp decline in animal populations due to competition from commercial meat breeds.

The breed was considered extinct at the end of the 20th century. The Barbezieux, which are still present at the moment, emerge from a single trunk. Due to several external characteristics, it is assumed that the animals of today correspond phenotypically with the original Barbezieux, but not necessarily from a genotypic point of view.

flesh

The Barbezieux capons in particular were a delicacy in the past and were expressly praised by the French restaurateur JeanAnthelme Brillat-Savarin.
