history

The name "Bardscha" comes from the Greek , from 'Ta Eparchia' (dt. Cultural center). Another theory traces the name back to the Syrian word 'Burgas' (English: hill overlooking the sea). The residents of Bardscha are commonly referred to as 'Bardjawi'.

Bardscha was only created in the middle of the 20th century. The area has naturally fertile soils, springs and limestone deposits, and Bardscha also benefited from its strategically favorable location on the coast of Lebanon. In the past, agriculture and textile processing were the predominant industries.

The devastating earthquake of 1956 destroyed large parts of the city. Since then, the city has undergone steady development and the damage from then has given way to modern buildings.

During the Lebanese civil war (1975–1990), many young people emigrated all over the world. With the support of the Rafiq al-Hariri Foundation, they were able to study at foreign universities.

The city still has examples of the region's traditional architectural style. The main shopping street, Al-Ain Avenue, stretches between three large hills and over and over again offers a view of the Levantine Sea .

Since the turn of the millennium, Bardscha has seen rapid westernization and infrastructure improvement. Cinema, European music and video games have also made their way. In Bardscha there are many commuters to Beirut due to the well-developed traffic routes, but most of them come home at the weekend.
