Barent Avercamp

Barent Avercamp also Berend or Bernard Avercamp called (* 1612 / 13 in Kampen , † before 24. October 1679 in Kampen) was a Dutch painter , draftsman and timber merchants.

Eldest son of Peter Avercamp and Elisabeth van Ingen. Raised in Zwolle (1615–1626), Barent lived in Kampen from 1626 and was a student of his uncle Hendrick Avercamp , whose style he consistently continued. In 1640 he married Mechtelt Hoberinck's first marriage. In the same year he moved to Zutphen . From 1650 he lived again in Kampen. In 1658 he married Aeltien Gerrits for the second time.

In addition to painting, Barent also traded in wood, was a co-owner of a mill and owned a pot foundry. Several times he held honorary positions. In 1656, 1662 and 1677 he was appointed dean of the Kampen artists' guild. Both as an entrepreneur and as a painter, he was in prosperity and reputation.

For a long time he stuck to his uncle's style and color scheme and mainly created multi-figure winter and ice scenes, which, however, did not quite reach Hendrick's works. It was only after 1650 that he reduced the areas depicted, the people depicted, and switched to more toned colors.
