Barefoot Gate (Augsburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Barfüßertor (originally Stravanstor or Steffingertor ) was a city gate of the inner city wall in the east of Augsburg city center. It is not to be confused with the Stephingertor . The gate was located directly next to today's Barefoot Church (built by the barefoot Franciscans ) and served as the exit to the city in the direction of Jakobervorstadt .

The exact time of construction is unknown, but it is estimated to be in the 11th century. This makes the barefoot gate one of the oldest gates in Augsburg. In 1376 a renovation and the construction of a front gate took place. The city architect Elias Holl led a renewed renovation and the construction of a bridge in 1611. The barefoot gate had meanwhile lost its function, as it was no longer an external gate due to the connection between Jakobervorstadt and the city fortifications. Because of the very narrow passage, it was demolished in 1825.
