Barkonid is a first time in 1986 for the Atari published Breakout - clone .
New versions appeared as Barkanoid 1997/98 for Windows 3.1 and from 2004 for Windows with DirectX and the platform-independent library SDL (including Linux , macOS , MorphOS ).
While Barkanoid for Windows 3.x was very reminiscent of DOS- based games and was only playable in window mode, several new features were introduced as of Barkanoid II:
- DirectX, among other things, for full screen mode
- Multi-player mode for playing on LAN or the Internet
- Level editor for designing own levels by the player
The newly introduced weather system, which provided the bonuses of rain, snowfall and even fog, was innovative. The weather effects could only be implemented to a limited extent due to the lack of computing power on the various platforms. They are completely absent from the Pegasos version.
