Barnwell is a place in southern Alberta , Canada with 613 inhabitants (2006) . The small community has a senior center, two parks and a public library.

history

In the late 19th century a freight car stood on a siding where Barnwell is today. It was used as a telegraph office by the settlers and the railway company . The area, initially called Woodpecker , was renamed Bountiful in 1908 to match the name of the school. A short time later it got its current name, Barnwell , because another congregation had already received the name Bountiful . The name Barnwell comes from William Barnwell, an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway .

Many of Barnwell's early settlers were miners who worked in the nearby coal mines. When these mines closed in 1920, however, they left Barnwell.

Demographics

Located at 835 meters above sea level, the town has a population of 613, which is distributed over 182 households. With an area of ​​0.9 km², this results in a population density of 680.5 inhabitants per square kilometer.
