history
In the late 19th century a freight car stood on a siding where Barnwell is today. It was used as a telegraph office by the settlers and the railway company . The area, initially called Woodpecker , was renamed Bountiful in 1908 to match the name of the school. A short time later it got its current name, Barnwell , because another congregation had already received the name Bountiful . The name Barnwell comes from William Barnwell, an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway .
Many of Barnwell's early settlers were miners who worked in the nearby coal mines. When these mines closed in 1920, however, they left Barnwell.
