Baron Baden-Powell , of Gilwell in the County of Essex , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on September 17, 1929 for the military and founder of the scout movement Sir Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baronet . During the Second Boer War, he had organized the defense of the city of Mafeking , which was besieged by the Boers for 217 days before it could be appalled. After retiring from military service, he founded the worldwide scout movement.

Robert Baden-Powell had already been appointed Baronet , of Bentley in the County of Southampton on December 4, 1922 in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom . This title is used as a subordinate title by the respective baron.
