Awards and subordinate titles
The first award title was on October 6, 1739 in the Peerage of Ireland to the politician Brabazon Ponsonby, 2nd Viscount Duncannon , bestowed. Already in 1724 he had inherited the titles of Baron Bessborough , of Bessborough, Piltown in the County of Kilkenny , and in 1723 Viscount Duncannon , of the Fort of Duncannon in the County of Wexford , from his father William Ponsonby , also a well-known Irish politician . These henceforth subordinate titles were given to his father on September 11, 1721 and February 28, 1722 in the Peerage of Ireland. On June 12, 1749, the 1st Earl was also the dignity of Baron Ponsonby , of Sysonby in the County of Leicester , bestowed. This henceforth subordinate title belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain and was linked to a hereditary seat in the House of Lords until 1999 .
In 1834 the future 4th Earl became Minister of the Interior in the Melbourne government . At the same time he was raised in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Baron Duncannon , of Bessborough in the County of Kilkenny . Since he inherited the earliest dignity when his father died in 1844, this title has also been listed as a subordinate dignity.
The 9th Earl was Governor General of Canada from 1931 to 1935 . On June 2, 1937, he was newly awarded the title of Earl of Bessborough , this time in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This dignity was extinguished when his son, the 10th Earl, died in 1993 without a male descendant.
The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title Viscount Duncannon as his title heir .
