Coat of arms of Earls Castle Stewart

Earl Castle Stewart , in the County of Tyrone , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on December 29, 1800 for Andrew Stewart, 1st Viscount Castle Stewart . This had already been raised to Viscount Stewart on December 20, 1793 in the Peerage of Ireland . In 1774 his claim to the title of 9th Baron Castle Stewart had already been confirmed. This title was created on November 7, 1619 in the Peerage of Ireland by his ancestor Andrew Stewart , who in 1615 had renounced his title 3rd Lord Stewart of Ochiltree , which had been awarded in the Peerage of Scotland in 1543 . After the death of the 6th Baron in 1686, his descendants entitled to inheritance had not formally claimed the title in the turmoil of the Glorious Revolution and Jacobite uprisings , which meant that it was suspended until 1774.

The current title holder is Arthur Stuart as 8th Earl.
