Lord Stewart of Ochiltree (also Lord Ochiltree ) was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland . The title is named after the feudal barony of Ochiltree in East Ayrshire .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on March 15, 1543 for Andrew Stewart, 2nd Lord Avondale . In 1513 he had inherited the 1500 for this created title Lord Avondale from his father . He later exchanged the territory associated with his title, the feudal barony of Avondale, with Sir James Hamilton of Finnart (son of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran ) for his feudal barony of Ochiltree, dropped the title of Lord Avondale and was given the title instead Awarded to Lord Stewart of Ochiltree .

His great-grandson, the 3rd Lord Stewart of Ochiltree, moved to Northern Ireland in 1611, where he acquired extensive land in County Tyrone . In 1615 he renounced his Scottish lord title in favor of the crown and was instead raised to Baron Castle Stewart in the Peerage of Ireland in 1619 .
