Baron Howard de Walden is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

The Barons' family seat was originally Audley End House near Saffron Walden , Essex .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on October 24, 1597 for the English admiral Sir Thomas Howard , a younger son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk , in which he was appointed to the House of Lords by Writ of Summons . This had played an important role in the victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588 . On July 21, 1603 he was also elevated to Earl of Suffolk by Letters patent . This earldom can only be inherited in the male line, while the Barony Howard de Walden as Barony by writ can also be inherited in the female line. When his grandson, the 3rd Earl, died on January 7, 1689 and left no sons, the Earldom fell to his brother, while the Barony in Abeyance fell between his two daughters Lady Essex Griffin and Lady Elizabeth Felton.

The Abeyance was only ended on August 3, 1784 in favor of the oldest co-heir, the British General Sir John Griffin as 4th Baron. This was a great-grandson of Lady Essex Griffin. This was elevated to Baron Braybrooke on September 5, 1788 . Since he remained childless, on his death on May 25, 1797, the barony of Braybrooke fell due to a special inheritance regulation to a male relative and the barony of Howard de Walden in Abeyance, between his sister Mary Parker and the great-grandson and only surviving descendants of Lady Elizabeth Felton, Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol .

When Mary Parker died childless on November 17, 1799, the Abeyance ended in favor of Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, as the sole heir. He had held the titles of Earl of Bristol and Baron Hervey since 1779 . On his death on July 8, 1803, the barony of Howard de Walden fell to his great-grandson Charles Ellis as the 6th baron, the still underage eldest son, the already deceased only daughter of his deceased eldest son. The Earldom of Bristol and the Barony of Hervey, however, fell to his brother.

When his father died on July 1, 1845, the 6th Baron also inherited his father's title as 2nd Baron Seaford . His eldest son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren had these two titles. The latter, the 9th Baron, left no sons on his death on July 9, 1999, only four daughters, between whom the barony of Howard de Walden fell again in Abeyance. The barony of Baron Seaford fell in male line to his third nephew Colin Ellis .

With Royal Warrant on June 25, 2004 the Abeyance finally ended in favor of the eldest daughter of the 9th Baron, Hazel Czernin . As the 10th baroness, she holds the title to this day.
