John Ligonier, 1st Earl Ligonier

Earl Ligonier was a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Great Britain and in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award

The title was first created on September 10, 1766 in the Peerage of Great Britain for Field Marshal John Ligonier, 1st Viscount Ligonier .

This was already in the Peerage of Ireland on December 31, 1757 the title Viscount Ligonier , of Enniskillen , and on May 20, 1762 the title Viscount Ligonier , of Clonmell, and on April 27, 1763 in the Peerage of Great Britain the title Baron Ligonier , of Ripley in the County of Surrey . Since he remained unmarried, he was given the title of Viscount Ligonier , of Clonmell, with the special addition that this title could be inherited by his nephew Edward Ligonier (1740–1782) and his male descendants in the absence of his own male descendants . When the 1st Earl died childless on April 28, 1770, all of his titles expired except for the latter Viscountcy, which fell to his nephew as the 2nd Viscount.

This 2nd Viscount was given the title Earl Ligonier , of Clonmell in the County of Tipperary , in the Peerage of Ireland on July 19, 1776 . Since he left no sons, his two titles finally expired on his death on June 14, 1782.
