The title was first bestowed on September 28, 1384 for Ralph Lumley when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons . He built Lumley Castle around 1392. He participated in the 1399 conspiracy to assassinate King Henry IV and reinstate King Richard II ( The Epiphany Rising ), but was captured and executed in 1400. His title was posthumously revoked and his lands including Lumley Castle confiscated from the Crown. In 1461 his grandson Thomas Lumley succeeded in restoring the title of 2nd Baron. The title expired in 1544 when the 5th Baron died, as his son George had forfeited his claims as a traitor because of his resistance to the dissolution of the English monasteries under King Henry VIII .
George's son, Sir John Lumley , achieved in 1547 that the title was reassigned to him by letters patent . However, the title expired when he died childless on April 11, 1609.
On May 31, 1681, the title was re-created for Richard Lumley, 2nd Viscount Lumley , a cousin of the last baron. In 1663 he had inherited the title Viscount Lumley , of Waterford , from his grandfather , which was given to him in 1628 in the Peerage of Ireland . In 1689 he was also raised in the Peerage of England to Viscount Lumley, of Lumley Castle in the County of Durham, and in 1690 to Earl of Scarbrough . His son, who later became 2nd Earl, was appointed to Parliament as 2nd Baron Lumley on March 4, 1715 by Writ of Acceleration and thereby inherited the title of baron prematurely. The Barony of Lumley is still a minor title of the Earls of Scarbrough to this day.
