Thomas Lumley, 2nd Baron Lumley

Thomas Lumley, 2nd Baron Lumley (* 1408 ; † 1497 ) was an English nobleman and diplomat .

Life

Thomas Lumley was under King Henry VI. ( House of Lancaster ) commissioned some diplomatic missions from 1450 to 1459. He acted here several times as a negotiator in various negotiations with the ambassadors of the King of Scotland. For his services he was appointed administrator of Scarborough Castle in 1455 .

After Edward IV's coronation from the House of York in 1461, Thomas Lumley joined the House of York. It is believed that this change of sides was due to the fate of his grandfather, Ralph Lumley, 1st Baron Lumley. This took part in a rebellion against Henry IV (House of Lancester) after his assumption of the throne, was executed for this and he was stripped of the title of Baron Lumley.

Thomas Lumley petitioned Parliament in 1461 to rehabilitate his grandfather, Ralph Lumley, and regain his title of nobility, Baron Lumley , of Lumley Castle in the County of Durham. This petition was successful and resulted in a corresponding Act of Parliament . Thomas Lumley was then immediately appointed as 2nd Baron Lumley Member of Parliament on July 26, 1461 and retained his seat until his death in 1497.

Even under Edward IV, he was given a number of diplomatic missions, including a. 1466 as negotiator in talks with King James III. of Scotland . The content of these discussions included marriage plans, which Jacob III. and which concerned a person close to Edward IV .

During the Wars of the Roses, Thomas Lumley fought at the Battle of Blore Heath in 1459 , at the Battle of Towton in 1461 and on the side of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick in the siege of Bamburgh Castle in 1464 .

Thomas Lumley's parents were Sir John Lumley and Felicia, daughter of Matthew Redman, Governor of Berwick.

Marriage and offspring

Thomas Lumley was married to Margaret, daughter of Lord Harrington. He had four children with her:

  • Joan ∞ Bertram Harbottle of Harbottle
  • Margaret ∞ Bertram Lumley of Ravensholm
  • Elizabeth ∞ William Tylliot

His grandson and namesake, Thomas Lumley, married Elizabeth Plantagenet, an illegitimate daughter of King Edward IV, in 1477.
