Baron Margadale

Baron Margadale , of Islay in the County of Argyll , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . It was created on January 1, 1965 for John Granville Morrison , a Conservative Party politician . It was the last to be granted a hereditary barony in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to a person who does not belong to the British royal family .

History of the title

John Granville Morrison represented the constituency of Salisbury as a member of the House of Commons for the Conservative Party between 1942 and 1964 . After his elevation to Baron Margadale, he became a member of the House of Lords , to which he belonged until his death. He also served as Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire . His great-grandfather, James Morrison , the son of an innkeeper from Hampshire , was also a member of the House of Commons for several years and became one of England's largest textile merchants and a well-known commercial banker. At his death in 1857 he left a fortune of £ 4 million , the second largest landless estate in Britain at the time after that of Nathan Mayer Rothschild , who left £ 5 million after his death in 1836. James Morrison's son, Charles Morrison, continued to grow his father's business, leaving a fortune of £ 10.9 million on his death. He was believed to be the second richest man in Great Britain at the time after Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster . The nephew of Charles Morrison and father of 1st Baron Margadale, Hugh Morrison , was also a member of the House of Commons for the Conservative Party from 1918 with a brief interruption until his death in 1931. Hugh Morrison's uncle James Morrison was also a politician and represented both the constituency of Wilton and Nottingham East as a member of the House of Commons for the Conservative Party .

After the death of 1st Baron Margadale in 1996, his eldest son James Ian Margadale inherited the title of 2nd Baron. Since his death in 2003, his son Alastair John Morrison is 3rd Baron Margadale . He was married to Lady Sophia Louise Sydney Cavendish , daughter of Andrew Cavendish, 11th Duke of Devonshire and a member of the Cavendish family .

Two other sons of the 1st Baron Margadale were also politically active. Charles Morrison was for the Conservative Party from 1964 to 1992 member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Devizes and between 1954 and the divorce in 1984 with the politician Sara Morrison married. The younger son, Peter Morrison , represented the Chester constituency in the House of Commons from 1974 to 1992 and served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher between 1988 and 1990 .

The family seat of the barons is Fonthill House in Fonthill Bishop in Wiltshire .
