Baron Rothschild
Baron Rothschild , of Tring in the County of Hertford , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awarding and other titles
The title was created on June 29, 1885 for the London banker Sir Nathan Mayer Rothschild, 2nd Baronet , who had financed the construction of the Suez Canal . He belonged to the British branch of the well-known Rothschild banking family . He was closely associated with Benjamin Disraeli and the first member of the House of Lords to be Jewish .
The first baron had inherited the subordinate title of 2nd Baronet of Grosvenor-place, in the County of Middlesex , from his uncle Anthony de Rothschild in 1876 . This was awarded to him on January 12, 1847 in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom . Since he had no children, this title was bestowed with the special inheritance rule that the title could also be inherited by his nephews Nathan Mayer Rothschild, Charles Alfred Rothschild and Leopold Rothschild or their male descendants in the absence of their own male descendants.
In addition, the first baron already held the imperial-Austrian title of " Freiherr von Rothschild" ( Baron de Rothschild ), which had been awarded to his grandfather Nathan Mayer von Rothschild by Emperor Franz I on September 29, 1822 with the nobility diploma . Queen Victoria , by deed dated June 16, 1838, had given permission to the father of the first baron, Lionel de Rothschild , who was a British subject, and all of his legitimate heirs to use this foreign title.
