Viscount Bolingbroke , in the County of Lincoln , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Award

On July 7, 1712, the title was created for Henry St. John . Together with the Viscountcy he was awarded the subordinate title of Baron St. John , of Lydiard Tregoze in the County of Wilts . Both titles were awarded with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, they could also be passed on to his father and his male descendants. From his father he also inherited the title of 5th Baronet St. John, of Lidiard Tregoze in the County of Wilts in 1742, which was given to his great-grandfather in 1611 in the Baronetage of England.

When he died childless in 1751, Frederick St. John, 3rd Viscount St. John , the eldest son of his half-brother, inherited his title. He already held the titles Viscount St. John and Baron St. John , of Battersea in the County of Surrey , which had been awarded to the father of the 1st Viscount Bolingbroke in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1716. The Viscountcies Bolingbroke and St. John have since been united.
