Frederick St. John, 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke ( December 21, 1732 - May 5, 1787 ) was a British peer and politician .

Life

He was the eldest son of John St. John, 2nd Viscount St. John from his marriage to Anne Furnese, half-sister and heir to Sir Henry Furnese, 3rd Baronet (1716-1735).

He was educated at Eton College . When his father died in 1748, he inherited his title of nobility as 3rd Viscount St. John and 3rd Baron St. John of Battersea . On the death of his uncle Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke , he also inherited his titles as 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke , 2nd Baron St. John of Lydiard Tregoze and 6th Baronet , of Lidiard Tregoze.

From 1762 to 1765 and from 1768 to 1780 he held the court office of Lord of the Bedchamber .

In 1763 he sold his property in Battersea , Surrey , to the Viscount Spencer .

Marriage and offspring

In 1757 he married the painter Lady Diana Spencer , daughter of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough . His wife was Queen Charlotte's lady- in- waiting from 1762 to 1768 . With Lady Diana he had two sons:

Around 1763 he entered into an extramarital relationship with the actress and courtesan Nelly O'Brien († 1768), with whom he had an illegitimate son:

  • Arthur St. John (* 1764).

His wife also had an extramarital relationship with Topham Beauclerk, because of which Frederick obtained a divorce from her on March 10, 1768.

When he died in 1787, his eldest son George inherited his title of nobility.
