Christian Gustavo Bassedas (born February 16, 1973 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine soccer player who played in defensive midfield. He participated in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . At the Pan American Games in 1995 he won the gold medal with the team. He has been the head coach of UAI Urquiza since 2018 .

Career

Bassedas started playing football in the youth department of CA Vélez Sarsfield . He played his first game in the competition team on March 3, 1991. He played as a libero, was an important part of Vélez in the 1990s and won four championships with the club. He also won five international titles with Vélez during this period, including the 1994 Copa Libertadores and the 1994 World Cup .

In 2000 he moved to the English Premier League club Newcastle United for £ 3.5 million . He played for them from 2000 to 2003. In the 2001 to 2002 season he was awarded for a short time to CD Tenerife . In January 2001 he scored his only goal for Newcastle in a game against Chelsea .

In 2003 he moved to Newell's Old Boys . He trained with the team for two months, but ended his career before the start of the new season.

He later commented on the English Premier League games for Fox Sport Latin America .

National team

Baassedas won the Pan American Games with the national team in 1995 . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, he won the silver medal with the team. He played several games in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup in France, but was not in the squad for the final tournament.

In late 2008, Bassedas became Vélez Sársfield's advisor in the Argentine Primera Division. His first recommendation was Ricardo Gareca as a coach. He was also involved in the negotiations to sign Maximiliano Moralez , Sebastián Dominguez and Joaquín Larrivey . In his first season, Vélez won the Clausura 09.

In November 2015, he was appointed coach of Vélez Sársfield. He resigned in September 2016 due to protests by supporters after the 3-0 defeat by Racing Club .

He was appointed head coach of Olimpo de Bahía Blanca on December 20, 2017 and UAI Urquiza head coach on October 6, 2018 .
