Baron Stourton , of Stourton in the County of Wilts , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

The historic family residence of the barons was Stourhead Estate in Stourton near Mere in Wiltshire until 1717 and is now Allerton Park near Knaresborough in West Yorkshire .

Awarding and other titles

The title was created on May 13, 1448 for Sir John Stourton when he was appointed to the House of Lords by Writ of Summons . He had previously been a Member of the House of Commons for Wiltshire and had held the office of Treasurer of the Household from 1446 . As barony by writes , in the absence of male heirs, the baron would also be hereditary in the female line, but there is still an unbroken male line.

The 20th Baron Stourton achieved in 1878 that the titles Baron Mowbray and Baron Segrave , which had been in Abeyance since 1777, and which had both been created in the Peerage of England in 1283, were restored to him as 23rd Baron Mowbray and 24th Baron Segrave. The three titles of baron have since been combined.
