The title was bestowed on September 28, 1885, the General and Commander in Chief of the British Forces in Egypt Garnet Wolseley, 1st Baron Wolseley . The Viscountcy was awarded with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants, the title could also be inherited by his daughter Frances and her male descendants.
