Barr Rosenberg

Barr Marvin Rosenberg (born November 13, 1942 in Berkeley , California , USA ) is an American scientist , economist and entrepreneur .

Life

Barr Rosenberg was born in 1942 to Marvin Rosenberg and Dorothy Fraser. On September 8, 1966, he married June Diane Weinstock.

Rosenberg graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts . He then earned a Master of Science degree in Economics from the London School of Economics in 1965 . He completed his PhD in philosophy at Harvard University in 1968 . Until 1974 he worked as an assistant professor at the University of California, where he became an associate professor and in 1978 a full professor of business administration. Between 1979 and 1981 he was the director of the Berkeley Program in Finance.

Entrepreneur

Rosenberg founded Barr Rosenberg Associates in Berkeley in 1975. The company developed and sold a software to use the multi-factor model for financial investments (especially stocks) developed by Rosenberg in practice. Just known in the industry as Barra , the product quickly became the de facto standard for analyzing equity portfolios. In 2004, MSCI bought what was then Barra (or Barra, Inc.).

MSCI continues to develop and sell a product called BarraOne, which is still partially based on the multi-factor model from Rosenberg.
