Barrhead South Parish Church

The Barrhead South Parish Church , also Barrhead South and Levern Parish Church is a Presbyterian church building in the Scottish town Barrhead in the Council Area East Renfrewshire . It is located in the city center at the intersection of Main Street and Arthurlie Street . In 1980 Barrhead South Parish Church was added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. The church is still in use as such today.

In the course of the "disruption" (split) of the Church of Scotland , the clergyman of the Bourock Parish Church , Alexander Salmon and around 350 members moved out of the church building in May 1843 and held the first service of the new congregation in the open behind the church Free Church of Scotland exits. In the following time, the financial means for the construction of an own church building were acquired, which was finally completed in 1846. The first service was held on July 12 of the same year. Bourock Parish Church remained closed until 1851 after the split. The building has belonged to the United Free Church of Scotland since 1900 and has served as a Parish Church since the reunification of this church with the Church of Scotland in 1929.

In 1937 the Barrhead South Parish Church underwent extensive renovations, including overhauling and electrifying the organ . Further renovations were carried out in 1965. In the course of this, new rooms were added behind the building.

Barrhead South Parish Church is set back 30 meters from the road. The building is symmetrical and has two aisles. It consists of jointed masonry made of hewn ashlar stones and is not plastered. The main entrance is on the north side. Three double-leaf doors lead into the interior, which is illuminated by various arched windows, with a triple window in the middle above the entrance.
