Barry Madlener (born January 6, 1969 in Leiden ) is a Dutch politician . He is close to the Partij voor de Vrijheid , which he has represented in several parliaments.

Life

Madlener grew up in Oostvoorne (district of Westvoorne ) and completed his training with the Havo in Rotterdam . He then worked as a real estate agent; He gave up this job in 2008. He and Kay van der Linde were among the party founders of Leefbaar Rotterdam (German: Livable Rotterdam) and Leefbaar Nederland , which ideologically followed the party leader Pim Fortuyn , in 2001 . Madlener was considered a confidante of Fortuyn, who was murdered in May 2002. On March 14, 2002, Madlener became a member of the Rotterdam City Council for Leefbar Rotterdam, which had won 17 seats in a surprise victory in the elections. Madlener became his party's spokesman for infrastructure measures, and particularly campaigned for a university campus at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam . He also advocated a ban on veiling in local authorities and the compulsory participation of Muslim girls in mixed-sex physical education. Madlener resigned from the city council on July 1, 2007.

Madlener moved away from previous party friends such as Marco Pastors or Joost Eerdmans and was one of the prominent supporters of Geert Wilders , who left the VVD in 2005 in order to subsequently found his one-man party Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV). Wilders selected Madlener to represent the PVV in parliament. Madlener was therefore from November 30, 2006 to July 14, 2009 a member of the PVV parliamentary group in the Second Chamber of the States General .

From July 14, 2009 to September 19, 2012 Madlener was then a member of the European Parliament for the PVV and also the PVV parliamentary group spokesman there. He participated, among other things, in the Committee on Foreign Affairs and for parliamentary cooperation with Turkey. He took the position that the Netherlands paid too much for the EU and that Turkey should not become an EU member. In September 2012 he returned to the Second Chamber, into which he was elected in the 2012 parliamentary elections. Among other things, he attracted attention with the demand to let dogs loose on “Moroccan stone throwers” ​​in the Dutch streets. He was re-elected in 2017 .

Madlener lives in Rockanje (district of Westvoorne ) and has been living privately with a Croatian woman since 2002.
