Barrydale is a town in the municipality of Swellendam , Overberg District , Western Cape Province in South Africa .
In 2011, Barrydale had 4,156 residents. The city is located 240 kilometers east of Cape Town on Route 62 between Montagu and Ladismith . If you come from the N2 , you can reach it after driving over the Tradouws Pass and crossing the Langeberg Mountains . The word Tradouw is a Khoisan word , it means “path of women” and indicates that this pass was used long before the arrival of the Europeans.
climate
The mountain range of the Langeberg Mountains shields the city from the rain showers of the clouds moving in from the Indian Ocean, so that the average annual rainfall is only 300 mm. The rain falls mostly in the winter months from July to September. Geographically, the city is on the border with the Little Karoo . Fruit (peaches, apples and pears) and wine thrive on the fertile soils of the Tradouw Valley, which stretches from Montagu to Barrydale.
history
The town was founded in 1882. It is named after John Joseph Barry, who never lived in Barrydale, but whose trading company from Swellendam dominated the region in the 19th century.
