Conrath was a son of Harmen Conrath (baptized January 27, 1657 in Hamburg; † August 31, 1701 ibid) and his wife, whose name was unknown. The couple married on July 28, 1655. The father worked as a painter and master of the painter's office. From 1673 to 1683 he designed the ceiling, the choir and the stalls of the St. Pankratius Church in Ochsenwerder . He also decorated their altar and pulpit. He probably also painted the pictures on the altar.

Conrath's brother Martin Conrath (baptized February 8, 1660 in Hamburg; † February 27, 1733) painted the pictures in the gallery of the St. Nikolai Church in Moorfleet .

Barthold's childhood, youth and artistic training are not documented. His father probably gave him his first painting lessons. Later he probably learned from Jürgen Ovens . In 1683 he took over the function of master painter. In 1696 he married a woman from Eckernförde , unknown by name , with whom he had five children. On June 29, 1696 he acquired citizenship there.

1707 Conrath sold his house in Eckernförde and settled in Tönning. Here he took the citizen oath on December 24, 1707. Conrath died in Tönning in early May 1719.

Works

Conrath's first work was probably 1691 the frame carved by Hinrich Röhlke of an epitaph donated by Jürgen Ovens on the Sankt Laurentiuskirche in Tönning. Conrath put it together and gilded it. Three years later he designed a wall behind this epitaph.

The vaulted ceiling of the Tönninger church is considered to be Conrath's main work. The artist signed and dated his painting on October 23, 1704. In 1961, restorers stated that the pictures were made by an “artist who was thoroughly familiar with this technique”. He also painted ornamental shapes and cartouches freehand and did not use stencils for this. For this reason, it must be assumed that the artist had previously created such paintings.

In 1703 Conrath probably painted “Pentecost” under the cover of the pulpit of the Laurentiuskirche and began restoring the epitaph Jürgen Ovens. In 1704/05 he decorated a baptismal lid here. In 1707 he signed an epitaph donated by Hans Jürgens. If necessary, he also designed the epitaph for Mayor Claus Reyer.

Conrath's other notable works include an epitaph for Christine de Wulfen, wife of the fortress commander Zacharias Wolf . The artist painted the central picture in 1708. It initially hung in the Tönninger Sophienkirche, the garrison church that was demolished in 1744. It has been on display in St. Martin's Church in Tellingstedt since it was sold in 1744 .

After 1708 until the end of his life, Conrath worked repeatedly for the church in Tönning. Since he received only small amounts of money for this, it cannot be assumed that these were larger works. Other works of art from his hand are not documented.
