location

Excerpt from a city map from 1905, in which the Bartholomäuskirche is located in the square St.-Bartholomäi-Kirchgasse, Faulgraben, Schüsseldamm and Baumgartsche Gasse.

The Bartholomew Church is in today's Zaułek Św. Bartłomieja , which runs directly south of the church and was only created in the 1990s. The former St. Bartholomäi Kirchgasse , which ran west of the church, was closed in connection with the construction of the Galeria Handlowa Madison shopping center .

history

Inside the church.

The origins of the Bartholomäuskirche go back to the 1480s when a Gothic chapel was built in the old town of Gdańsk . The Lutheran rite was introduced in Bartholomew's Church as early as 1524, although Gdansk did not have a spiritual ministry until 1566 with Johann Kittel as senior . The church tower was added to the existing church between 1591 and 1600.

Statue of Vladimir the Holy in front of the Bartholomew Church

After the destruction of the Second World War and the reconstruction, the Bartholomäuskirche first passed into the hands of the Jesuits , who used it until 1990. On February 24, 1967, the church was placed under monument protection. The then Archbishop of Gdańsk, Tadeusz Gocłowski , made the church available to the Greek Catholic community in Gdańsk, founded in 1957, on July 3, 1997, which has been operating it ever since. Since then it has been under the full name of “St. Bartholomäus and Protection of the Mother of God “also co- cathedral of the Wroclaw-Danzig Eparchy, founded in 1996. With this in mind, a statue of Vladimir the Holy was placed in front of the church .
