Tadeusz Gocłowski CM (born September 16, 1931 in Piski , Poland , † May 3, 2016 in Danzig ) was Archbishop of Danzig .

Life

Tadeusz Gocłowski grew up on a farm in Piski that his parents bought after returning from the United States. From 1946 to 1951 he attended the Minor Seminary of Vincent von Paul in Cracow and passed his Abitur at III Gimnazjum im. Króla Jana III Sobieskiego in Krakow. In October 1949 he joined the Congregation of the Lazarists and took his final vows on December 15, 1951 . From 1951 to 1956 he studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Theological Mission Institute in Krakow (Instytut Teologiczny Księży Misjonarzy). Tadeusz Gocłowski received on June 26 in 1956 by Bishop Stanislaw Rospond the sacrament of Holy Orders . From 1956 to 1959 he studied canon law at the Catholic University of Lublin . At the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas , he completed a doctoral degree in canon law in 1969/70. Gocłowski taught at the Theological Mission Institute in Cracow (1959–1960) and at the seminary in Gdansk (1960–1968), where he also held the rectorate from 1971 to 1973 and 1982 to 1983. He was involved in the talks in Magdalenka in 1988/89, which laid the foundations for the round table that took place in Warsaw between February 6 and April 5, 1989 during the transition phase from the communist regime to the democratic republic of Poland .

March 22, 1983 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To the titular of Beneventum and auxiliary bishop in Gdansk. The Polish primate , Józef Cardinal Glemp , donated him his episcopal ordination on April 17, 1983 in Gdańsk's Marienkirche . In 1983/84 he was vicar general in Gdansk and was appointed provost of the cathedral chapter. On December 31, 1984, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Gdansk. With the restructuring of the Polish dioceses through the Apostolic Constitution Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus of March 25, 1992 and the associated elevation of the diocese of Danzig to the archbishopric, Tadeusz Gocłowski was appointed the first archbishop of Danzig and thus also the first metropolitan of the newly created church province of the same name .

During his term of office there were, among other things, disputes about the Polish priest Henryk Jankowski , for whose canonical measures Gocłowski was responsible as his diocesan bishop. After the fall of the Wall in Poland, Jankowski had attracted attention several times through anti-Jewish statements in sermons. The government of Israel protested against this in the mid-1990s ; the Polish public prosecutor's office investigated. In 1997, Jankowski said at a church service that Poland should “ not accept a Jewish minority in the government ” in its struggle for freedom ; then Gocłowski banned him from preaching for a year.
Gocłowski was considered a critic of the national conservative radio station Radio Maryja .

According to the provisions of can. 401 § 1 CIC accepted Pope Benedict XVI. on April 17, 2008 Gocłowski's resignation due to age reasons.
