Barton Seagrave Hall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barton Seagrave Hall is a manor house in the village of Barton Seagrave near Kettering in the English county of Northamptonshire .

history

Barton Seagrave Hall originally had the Humphrey family built in 1550 . In 1665 they were bought by John Bridges (1642-1712) from Warwickshire , son of Major Bridges from Alcester . John Bridges was Sheriff of Northampton in 1675 . After his death, his son, John Bridges (1666–1742) inherited the house. He was an archaeologist and a Fellow of the Royal Society . Then the house fell to his brother, William Bridges (1668–1741), who let the renovations that his father had begun continue. The year 1725 can be read on the rainwater outlets. But William went into debt and was forced to mortgage the house in 1733.

Later in the 18th century the house belonged to the Wilcox family and then Richard Tibbits , whose son was responsible for further modernizing the house. Lady Mary Isabella Hood-Tibbits lived in the manor for many years until her death in 1904.

The house was then sold to Charles Wickstead . He built Wickstead Park around the house. After his death, the house and park became part of the Wickstead Village Trust .

The house was then a hotel for a while and then a nursing home. For a while the NHS was located on the first floor, then an arts center moved in. Artists and designers were housed on the first floor and in the stables. Today the manor houses a wine bar and the Barton Hall Hotel . The house can also be rented for weddings and other events.

construction

Barton Seagrave Hall is two stories, limestone and covered with Colweston slate . The main facade faces south and has protruding end yokes with simple gables and a vestibule with a central gable and a classic entrance. The east wing with its small rooms appears to be older than the rest of the house. The orangery is listed by English Heritage as a Grade I Historic Building.
