Barva is a city with around 5000 inhabitants in the Central American state of Costa Rica and the capital of the canton of the same name in the province of Heredia .

history

The village was founded in 1561. The name goes back to Barvak, an indigenous king who ruled the region before the arrival of the Spain. The first church in Barva could have been built between 1568 and 1575. In 1613 a Franciscan monastery was founded in the city . The city is believed to have been called San Bartolomé de Barva since then. The city grew with the foundation of the monastery. In 1693 53 families lived there. Six years later there were 575 inhabitants and in the 1709 census the city had 641 inhabitants - mostly of indigenous origin.

In an earthquake on February 15, 1772, the monastery of Barva was destroyed and large parts of the former church collapsed. In another earthquake on December 30, 1888, the remains of the church were completely destroyed. The construction of today's church Iglesia de San Bartolomé de Barva began with the laying of the foundation stone on February 9, 1867. It was completed in 1893.

The first Barva Town Hall opened on August 7, 1820. In the same year the first school in town was founded.
