Bas de Gaay Fortman (born November 6, 1937 in The Hague , actually Bastiaan de Gaay Fortman ) is a Dutch economist and politician of the Politieke Partij radicals .

Life

His father was the politician and former Dutch Interior Minister Wilhelm Friedrich Gaius de Gaay Fortman . Gaay Fortman studied law and economics at the Vrijen Universiteit Amsterdam . In 1967 he left the Netherlands for a few years and taught as a professor of economics at the University of Zambia .

He first became a member of the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij , switched to Politieke Partij Radialen in 1970 and was a member of the newly founded GroenLinks party from 1991 . From 1971 to 1977 Gaay Fortman was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for Politieke Partij radicals. From 1977 to 1991 he was a senator in the First Chamber of the States General for Politieke Partij Radikal. From 1977 to 1984 he was President of the Dutch section of Oxfam . In 1990 he was a delegate of the Reformed Church of the Netherlands to the World Council of Churches in Canberra. From 1990 to 1992 Gaay Fortman taught at the Institute for Social Sciences in The Hague.

As a university lecturer, Gaay Fortman taught economics at the University of Utrecht from 2002 .
