The Basilica of the Assumption in Ľutina is the oldest Greek Catholic basilica in Slovakia . The pilgrimage church of the Prešov Archeparchy is consecrated to the Virgin Mary under the patronage of the Assumption of Mary . It has been a national cultural monument of Slovakia since 1963 .

history

The basilica is based on an apparition of St. Nikolaus von Myra in 1851, where he is said to have handed over an icon of Mary. Then Ľutina developed into the largest pilgrimage site of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia. After a wooden church, the construction of today's church began in 1896, which was completed and consecrated in 1908. After the re-establishment of the Greek Catholic Church in 1968, the number of pilgrims increased from year to year. An extensive restoration of the church was carried out between 1981 and 1984. At the end of the year of Mary in 1988, the Ordinary and later Bishop Ján Hirka announced that Pope John Paul II would elevate the church to the rank of minor basilica .

The main pilgrimage takes place on the occasion of the feast of the Assumption on August 15th.
