The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist (Hungarian Szent János ) is located in the Hungarian town of Sárospatak , within the walls of the Rákóczi Castle . It is one of the largest hall churches in Northern Hungary and is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Eger . In 2007 the church was founded by Pope Benedict XVI. raised to the rank of a minor basilica .

As early as the 11th century, a small rotunda was built here as a chapel for the royal court house, which was enlarged a century later. The current Gothic church was completed in 1492. In 1737 the church fell victim to a major fire, which resulted in 50 years of restoration. Parts of the church, such as B. the roof, were subsequently redesigned in baroque style. During this time the church also received the baroque high altar, which comes from the Carmelite monastery in Buda, which was closed at that time. The organ was installed in the church at the end of the 18th century. The last restoration took place in 1964–1970. It is the repository of the clothing and bone relics of St. Elisabeth, who was born here .
