Max Beschoren (born July 6, 1847 in Eisleben , Province of Saxony , † late 1887 in southern Brazil) was a German geographer . He explored parts of Brazil and Uruguay .

Life

The son of a merchant received his schooling in Meißen in the Kingdom of Saxony from 1851 , which continued in Zwickau when his father was appointed mine director there. In his youth he worked in the book trade, which provided him with scientific literature. He graduated from high school in Annaberg and began training as an engineer and mathematician at the Dresden Polytechnic , which he continued in Halle .

In 1868, Beschoren finally emigrated to Brazil and went to São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul , the southernmost province of the country and today's state of Rio Grande do Sul . In November of that year he reached the provincial capital Porto Alegre , where he initially worked as a teacher. Soon afterwards he received an assignment as a geodesist - an activity that he carried out for 18 years and covered around 3,000 Legoas . In June 1887 he received an order to set the signal points for triangulation , which Emil Odebrecht should then carry out, in the mountainous terrain between Nonohay , Pepery and Chapecó . Despite six busy months, he was unable to complete this preparatory work in the arduous terrain and was found dead in his hut one day.

Works

Max Beschoren wrote essays and treatises for the journal of the Society for Geography in Berlin and for the organ of the Central Association for Commercial Geography and Promotion of German Interests Abroad in Berlin. In Porto Alege he made articles for the Deutsche Zeitung and Koseritz 'Deutsche Zeitung .

His main work, published posthumously by Henry Lange , is entitled “Contributions to the closer knowledge of the Brazilian province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul. Travels and observations during the years 1875–1887 ” , but it also contains reports on other areas, such as the western part of the island of Kefalonia .
