history

The first church in the Irish-influenced Chatham , a current district of Miramichi, was built in 1839. With the creation of the Diocese of Chatham from areas of the Diocese of Saint John, the church was elevated to cathedral in 1860. A fire completely destroyed the cathedral in 1878. The new construction began in 1903 and was completed by the Berlinguet Company by 1922. A first service took place in the lower church in 1908. With the relocation of the bishopric in 1938 to the French-speaking Bathurst of the now diocese of Bathurst , the cathedral lost its rank. It again became part of the English-speaking diocese of Saint John with the title of a procathedral. In 1989 Pope John Paul II granted the church the rank of minor basilica. It has been on the List of Historic Places in Canada since 2005.

architecture

The church was built according to plans by the architect Patrick Keely in the neo-Gothic style and can accommodate 1200 people. The church was built from local sandstone and clad with ready-cut stones.

The copper spire rises above the single tower facade on the north side, the church tower bears four bells from 1909. Three portals in neo-Gothic style lead through the vestibule into the nave, whose arcade is clad in marble with 28 columns. Stained glass windows by Guido Nincheri and Matthew Martirano illuminate the nave, which rises 25 meters to the vaulted ceiling, with narrow side aisles. The choir is closed with a polygonal apse. The Chapel of Our Lady is on the west wall.
