The Basilica of Our Lady of Health ( Spanish Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud ) is the main Roman Catholic church of Pátzcuaro in the Mexican state of Michoacán . It bears the title of a minor basilica and is protected as a historical monument under the number 10045.

history

The church was built between 1538 and 1579 at a central point on a Purépecha pyramid. Its appearance today is the result of several renovations. Until the seat of the Morelia diocese was relocated in 1580, it served as a cathedral . On January 23, 1924, Pope Pius XI gave the church . awarded the rank of minor basilica .

Building

The church facade with a side tower is simply designed with a few ornamental elements. The one-nave church in the baroque New Spanish style has a roofed altar in the choir, which shows the miraculous image of the Virgin of Health . It was modeled from a mass of corn flour and orchid honey in accordance with the custom of the time in the 16th century and is greatly revered by the Purépecha Indians. The Virgin of Health is the patroness of the region. In a side chapel of the main building there is an urn with the remains and some of the belongings of the first bishop Vasco de Quiroga in a memorial .
