The Basilica of Our Lady of Piat ( English Basilica of Our Lady of Piat ) is a Roman Catholic church in Piat in the Philippine province of Cagayan . The church in the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao is consecrated with the patronage of the Visitation of Our Lady Mary and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

In 1604 the image of a black virgin Mary with the baby Jesus on her left arm was brought to the Philippines by the Dominicans from Macau . In 1622 the portrait came to Piat. After it had meanwhile been replaced by a more beautiful picture from Manila, it returned to Piat at the request of the Itawi population and was set up in a small shrine in the presence of 10,000 believers.

In the 1700s, a larger church was built from durable materials on a hill about two kilometers from the Santo Domingo parish church. The present basilica was built by Pastor Diego Pinero and later by Brother Jose Gurumeta until 1875.

In 1954 the image of Our Lady of Piat was canonically crowned . On June 22, 1999, Pope John Paul II made the sanctuary a minor basilica. The solemn liturgy was celebrated by Cardinal Antonio María Javierre Ortas .

architecture

The neo-Romanesque basilica has a simple facade with three church doors, which is flanked on the left by a high bell tower . It is located on a hill, protected from flooding. The church was built mainly from red bricks. The interiors have a vaulted wooden ceiling with historical pictures and representations on the walls. In the altar, the statue of the Virgin Mary is protected by a glass box. At the back of the church there is a staircase that leads to a window behind the casing of the statue of the Virgin Mary. Through this window, believers can touch the statue's dress.

Adjacent to the basilica is a sacred museum, the parish monastery and a way of the cross with life-size representations.
