The Weilheimer Hans Degler (* 1564 , † 1635 ) was an important sculptor of the southern Bavarian late Renaissance and the early phase of the Baroque .

Hans Degler was born in Munich (?) In 1564 as the son of the Weilheim sculptor of the same name. He received his education either from his father or from his later father-in-law Adam Krumpper (the father of Hans Krumpper ). He created his first surviving works for the chapel of Duchess Maria Maximilliana at the Munich court from 1590–1595 in collaboration with Adam Krumpper. In 1590 Degler married Helena Krumpper († 1627) and received Weilheim citizenship.

After the death of his father-in-law, he took over his workshop, in which he employed a large number of employees and trained a new generation of well-known artists ( Christoph Angermair , Hans Jakob Zürn and others). His brother-in-law Hans Krumpper brokered influential commissions for him, such as for the Reichsstift St. Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg and the Kremsmünster Abbey in Upper Austria. From 1607 to 1628 Degler Weilheimer was a member of the council (from 1617 he belonged to the advisory board of the Inner Council) and in 1627 he married a second time. After 1628 he got into financial difficulties and died impoverished of the plague in Weilheim in 1635. Degler had two brothers who were also active as sculptors (one in Vienna). The marriage to Helena Krumpper resulted in two sons (David, Andreas) who followed their father professionally. Many works have been preserved by David Degler (1605–1682), who continued his father's workshop.
