history

The church is first mentioned in a document in 1160. In the first half of the 13th century it was elevated to a parish church. The current church structure was built between 1695 and 1709 by an Italian master builder under the pastor Balthasar Schosser as building director. The new building was erected on top of the old one so that the order of worship was not interrupted. Due to the War of the Spanish Succession , construction came to a standstill from 1704. After interventions in 1708, the building was largely completed in 1710.

Furnishing

High altar

The decor is remarkable. The important high altar was previously the high altar of the Kremsmünster collegiate church and was transferred to Grünau in 1712, where it was however reduced in size. The structure of the altar is based on a design by Hans Krumppers and was made by Hans Schiele . Both were carpenters for the Kremsmünster Abbey. In the center there is a prominent figure depicting St. James the Elder. It is flanked by statues of Saints Melchizedek and John the Baptist . The two figures come from the year 1616 or 1617 by Hans Degler from Weilheim in Upper Bavaria . In the essay there is an excellent figure of the world savior . It is flanked by figures of Saints Benedict and Agapitus von Praeneste , which were created by Hans Peysser from Nuremberg in 1531. They were taken over from the late Gothic altar. The remaining altar sculptures are probably by Hans Spindler . The tabernacle was made in the Rococo style.

On the left side altar, which is dated to 1690, there is a remarkable sculpture by Michael Zürn the Younger . The right side altar has baroque parts. The tabernacle dates from the third quarter of the 18th century. The pulpit was built around 1680. In the choir there are four statues of saints from the mid-18th century. Oil paintings are also hanging in the choir: one shows “Christ on the Cross” by Josef Krall from the second third of the 18th century, three other baroque paintings are by Julius Gürtler . The altarpiece in the Anna Chapel was painted by Josef Krall in 1777.

At the cemetery there are wrought iron crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Bell jar

The bell was cast in 1604.
