Two US runners as well as two British and two French had qualified for the final. The starting field was completed by a Canadian and a Brazilian.
The Olympic champion from 1984 , Carl Lewis and the winner of the US Olympic trials Joe DeLoach were the favorites for this race.
As expected, the final turned into a duel between DeLoach and Lewis. Halfway through the route, Lewis was in the lead with a wafer-thin lead over DeLoach, followed closely by the Brazilian Robson da Silva and the Briton Linford Christie. Over the next few meters Lewis even increased his lead slightly, but in the end Joe DeLoach came up. He had the better stamina and became an Olympic champion. With 19.75 s he ran a new Olympic record . With this time well under twenty seconds, he has made a place at the top of the all-time best list of the 200-meter run . Only four hundredths of a second behind him, Carl Lewis won the silver medal. The battle for bronze was also extremely close. In 20.04 s Robson da Silva prevailed over Linford Christie by five hundredths of a second. The Canadian Atlee Mahorn was fifth, the Frenchman Gilles Quenéhervé was sixth, a hundredth of a second behind.
In the twentieth Olympic final, Joe DeLoach won the fourteenth US gold medal. It was also the USA's twelfth double victory.
