At the age of 17 he started his apprenticeship with J. Langelerius, who was a friend of his father, in La Rochelle in France in order to prepare himself thoroughly for his profession in the pharmaceutical company ( pharmacopolium ). After completing his training, he returned to Emden and opened a pharmacy in the south wing of the town hall in 1598 , which existed until 1780 as the "Adler Pharmacy".

Alting had great services in the local politics of Emden. He became a member of the College of Forty in 1610 and served as its president from 1619 to 1621. That year he was elected councilor. Since 1616 he was active in the office of the church elder of the community, since 1628 several times lower court lord, 1629 council rent master and since 1615 captain of the citizen company. He was a wealthy man and owned shares in a shipping company.

On May 20, 1604 he married Anna Fijtken and on November 16, 1606 they had a son, Gerhardus Alting.
