Basin Street Boys (1935)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Basin Street Boys were an American vocal ensemble from the late 1930s.

Vocalists Steve Gibson, George Thompson, Perry Anderson and Sam Hutcherson began performing as 4 Dots in Lynchburg, Virginia in the early 1930s . In 1935, the band leader Jean Calloway brought her to his tour program under the name Basin Street Boys . Together they appeared in a number of feature films (such as Murder at the Vanities ) and animated shorts, including The Bronze Venus (also known as The Duke Is Tops , with Lena Horne in the lead role) in 1938 , in which they sang "Thursday Evening Swing" . In the music for the animated film Clean Pastures (1937) they sang alongside Fats Waller , Stepin Fetchit , Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and Al Jolson ; In The Isle of Pingo Pongo (1938) they interpreted the jazz standards " Sweet Georgia Brown " and " St. Louis Blues " by imitating the instrumental parts vocally in a Vocalese- like style. In 1937 they recorded the song "Come John Come", their only record. They toured the American Southwest and, after Samuel Hutchinson returned to Lynchburg, performed in clubs in Los Angeles until 1938. Steve Gibson was later a member of the vocal ensemble 5 Red Caps .

The vocal ensemble should not be confused with the vocal quartet of the same name , named by Steve Gibson's friend Ormond Wilson in 1945 based on the earlier Basin Street Boys .
