The Basketball Nations Cup was a top-class international basketball tournament for student national teams, which was organized every two years from 2003 to 2009 by the university sports of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

history

In July 2003 and July 2005, four student national teams (including A2 national teams) met each other in the Berg Fidel sports hall at the Basketball Nations Cup. The teams use the Basketball Nations Cup as preparation for the Summer Universiade . After the Olympic Games, the Summer Universiade, which takes place every two years, is the largest multisport event in the world.

2003

The year 2003 in North Rhine-Westphalia was all about university sports . In the year of university sport proclaimed by the state government , the North Rhine-Westphalian universities hosted numerous top sport events. The 1st Basketball Nations Cup was one of the outstanding sporting events of the year. The tournament was organized by the Münster University Sports Association, the German Basketball Association and the General German University Sports Association in order to prepare the German national student team intensively and professionally for the Universiade in Daegu / South Korea (August 21st to 31st, 2003).

With the University Sports Münster, an organizer was selected that has organized numerous top sporting events in recent years.

The German national student team met the national teams from Estonia , Russia and Turkey in the Berg Fidel sports hall . The four national student teams took part in the 1st Basketball Nations Cup at the Universiade in Daegu.

The Russian team reached 2nd place in Daegu and won the silver medal. In the final on August 31, 2003, the Russians lost against the selection from Serbia and Montenegro 76:85. The placements of the other three teams at the Universiade: Turkey: 6th place, Estonia: 9th place and Germany: 10th place.

2005

In 2005, the University Sports Münster hosted the Basketball Nations Cup for the second time. For the German national student team, intensive preparation for the Universiade in Izmir / Turkey (August 11-21, 2005) was the focus. At the 2nd Basketball Nations Cup, the German team met the national teams from Russia and Turkey. The field of participants was completed by an American college team. The American team was made up of the best players from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) .

The teams used the tournament very successfully to prepare for the Universiade. The results of the basketball tournament of the Universiade in Izmir make clear the high sporting importance of the Basketball Nations Cup as "Universiade preparation": Of the total of 30 national teams, the four teams that took part in the tournament in Münster were among the top six. The results: Turkey: 6th place, Germany: 5th place, Russia: 4th place and USA: 1st place (gold medal).

2007

In 2007 the Summer Universiade was held from August 8th to 18th, 2007 in Bangkok / Thailand . At the 3rd edition of the Basketball Nations Cup, the German national team again focused on preparing for the Universiade. The tournament took place from July 6th to 8th, 2007 in Münster . The German team met the national teams from Japan , Lithuania and the Ukraine and won the Basketball Nations Cup for the first time.

2009

After the 2003 year of university sports , which was unique in Germany, the University Sports Week took place from June 22 to 28, 2009 in North Rhine-Westphalia . For the fourth time, the German national student team prepared for the Universiade at the tournament in Münster , which took place from July 1st to 12th, 2009 in Belgrade . The teams selected from Brazil , Israel and the Ukraine were both “training partners” and tournament opponents .

Dirk Bauermann , coach of the A-team, personally accompanied the youngsters. The up to 500 spectators could only see one victory of the DBB-Elf. In the end, Brazil won unbeaten in front of Israel (2nd), Germany (3rd) and Ukraine (4th).
